Acupuncture is part of a traditional Chinese medicine system, originating in the Far East over 3,000 years ago. Acupuncture has prevailed as a therapy, largely because of it''s ongoing track record of effectiveness, as well as due to the ability to evolve and adapt to modern day ailments. Generally, people use acupuncture either to treat a specific ailment, or to maintain health and wellbeing. It is beneficial in the treatment of both physical and mental-emotional ailments such as tension headaches, stress, muscle aches and pains, arthritis and chronic pain, digestive problems (IBS, Crohn''s, constipation, diarrhoea), depression and anxiety. One of the biggest myths surrounding acupuncture is that it hurts. This is largely due to the comparison of the needles to syringes. Acupuncture needles are around 0.2mm thick, stainless steel, sterilised and single use. The needle is inserted through the top layers of the skin with a gentle tap. As most of the pain sensors are found in the top layer, the pain sensation is largely avoided. Patients frequently report a tingling sensation or a dull ache. Diana Olafsdottir is a fully qualified acupuncturist, having undergone three years full time training in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Western medical biosciences. She is a member of the main regulating body for acupuncture in the UK, the British Acupuncture Council.
