When I started training BJJ in Manchester it quickly became apparent how powerful a martial art Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is. The reason the techniques are so devastatingly effective isn’t that they were unique to BJJ, but many of the same techniques are heavily used in traditional martial arts such as Aikido, Japanese Ju Jitsu and many more. What makes the difference is how Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is trained Alive. It’s not something exclusive to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, it is a trait shared by all fight sports such as Boxing, Wrestling, Judo, Kickboxing, Thai Boxing, Shooto, MMA and so on. Training alive wasn’t something that started with MMA and the birth of UFC in 1993, Bruce Lee popularised the idea in his creation of JKD in the 60’s. “I have not invented a "new style," composite, modified or otherwise that is set within distinct form as apart from "this" method or "that" method. On the contrary, I hope to free my followers from clinging to styles, patterns, or molds. Remember that Jeet Kune Do is merely a name used, a mirror in which to see "ourselves". . . Jeet Kune Do is not an organized institution that one can be a member of. Either you understand or you don't, and that is that. There is no mystery about my style. My movements are simple, direct and non-classical. The extraordinary part of it lies in its simplicity. Every movement in Jeet Kune Do is being so of itself. There is nothing artificial about it. I always believe that the easy way is the right way. Jeet Kune Do is simply the direct expression of one's feelings with the minimum of movements and energy. The closer to the true way of Kung Fu, the less wastage of expression there is. Finally, a Jeet Kune Do man who says Jeet Kune Do is exclusively Jeet Kune Do is simply not with it. He is still hung up on his self-closing resistance, in this case anchored down to reactionary pattern, and naturally is still bound by another modified pattern and can move within its limits. He has not digested the simple fact that truth exists outside all molds; pattern and awareness is never exclusive. Again let me remind you Jeet Kune Do is just a name used, a boat to get one across, and once across it is to be discarded and not to be carried on one's back.” - Bruce Lee As time progressed many instructors missed the message and were simply teaching Bruce Lee’s style, not adhering to the JKD concepts that he laid out. In 1993 a martial arts revolution began with the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) pitting one style against another. What was born out of this wasn’t a superior style of fighting but a superior style of training. Those training Forms, Kata, Lock flows were simply ineffective in live one to one fights. Those who trained Boxing, Kickboxing, Savate and Muai Thai dominated the standing range. Those who trained Judo and Wrestling controlled the clinch and takedown. At the time Ground Fighting / Submission Grappling was ill practiced so BJJ shone through. Each of these component delivery systems looks at how to fight under a certain rule set to develop that range. Modern Mixed Martial Arts causes individuals to engage at all ranges to explore fighting alive. Some fighters may choose to specialise in Boxing or stand up striking, some may enjoy throwing low kicks typically considered Muai Thai or maybe a “Kickboxing” head kick but a punch is a punch a kick is a kick others may specialise in Judo throws or Wrestling take downs. Therefore the style doesn’t matter, it is about the way you train and which technique proves most effective on the night. Through training against a fully resisting ‘Live’ opponent you are able to discover what works at a given range, you are able to create your own style that suits your body type, personality and temperament. The techniques that are practised in the gym are those that work, whereas the ones that don’t are laid to rest when a superior technique is found. Evolution is only natural in the bizarre eco system of fighting; can you afford to be training like a dinosaur when the competition is evolving effectively with the changing climate?
